Sailing Towards Sustainability: NAMEPA and the Commercial Maritime Industry’s Initiatives in Environmental Protection
James Spear, Seafarer and Regional Director of the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) talks to us about the international shipping industry, responsible for movement of over 90% of the world’s goods, is an indispensable link in global trade.
As stewards of the marine environment, the commercial maritime community spearheads a number of initiatives to promote sound environmental practices and increased marine preservation. A third generation seafarer and leader, James Spear brings together stakeholders to promote strategies, policies, and outreach for marine environmental protection and preservation. He works with industry professionals, educators, legislators, and regulators to raise public awareness of the maritime industry and serves as liaison between NAMEPA and university-level maritime academies.
